TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSICAL IDEAS
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify a single authoritative philosophy of musical ideas nor to determine in advance what a musical idea must be. A field concerned with musical thought must remain responsive to practices that differ in medium, history, method, aesthetic orientation, cultural location, and social function. Its concepts must be precise without pretending to universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing both singular experiences and the structures through which they become intelligible.
The programme therefore aims to establish conditions from which multiple philosophies of musical ideas may emerge: philosophies generated through practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. Such philosophies may disagree about whether ideas precede sound, reside in works, emerge in performance, depend upon listeners, or circulate through collective histories and technologies. Their value will not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which musical thought understands itself.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible, but also to become more accountable for the distinctions already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to hear, what they prevent us from hearing, and how musical practice and research might transform the terms of their own intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites individuals to undertake it collectively.
